Deep Root Fertilization

Why is fertilization beneficial?

Most of the plants growing along the Front Range are not native to Colorado and encounter foreign growing conditions.  Fertilization is designed to increase the plants’ vigor so it can ward off certain insect and disease organisms.  Depending on the plant species and related problems, added practices such as proper watering and pest control often need to be done in conjunction with fertilizing.  Iron deficiency (indicated by yellow foliage) can also be alleviated by fertilizing (although yellow foliage can also be caused by other problems). Top of Page.

What is the best way to fertilize?

Fertilizer can be applied in a variety of ways.  In Colorado’s clay soils, the most beneficial method is by liquid soil injection.  Soil injection at high pressure will break up compacted clay soils and aerate them, which is just as important as the fertilizer.  Best results are obtained by making a large number of holes under the tree and past the dripline, where possible.  An average property would require hundreds of holes.

When is the best time to fertilize?

Although there are many opinions on this, a rule of thumb is once in the spring and again in the fall.
